How Dental Insurance Works
Most PPO dental plans work on a 100/80/50 structure. Essentially, that means that preventive care is 100% covered, basic services are 80% covered, and major services are 50% covered.
Orthodontia usually falls into its own category. Some premium plans will pay for up to 50% of the cost of treatment, up to the amount of the policy’s lifetime orthodontic maximum. Basically, that means you may only be able to use your insurance once for braces or similar treatments.
Orthodontic coverage is more common for minors than for adults, but some plans do provide benefits for all ages.
What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?
Medical insurance is designed to help you care for your head-to-toe wellness. It covers things like your annual physical, emergency care, and management of both acute and chronic illnesses. It does not usually cover common oral health treatments, including orthodontia.
Dental insurance, on the other hand, is all about caring for your smile. It applies to cleanings, exams, fillings, and more. As we already mentioned, it may even help pay for braces in some cases.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
If you have a PPO insurance plan, you are welcome to use it at virtually any dentist’s or specialist’s practice. Therefore, whether we are in your network or outside of it, we invite you to find out how you can use your insurance in our offices.
In-Network Coverage
If we are in-network with an insurance plan, it means we have a contract that manages fees and encourages a certain standard of care. Often, patients pay less out-of-pocket when they visit an in-network provider. Our practice is in-network with some popular plans; give us a call to find out if yours is one of them!
Out-of-Network
Even if we are out of your insurance network, you might be pleasantly surprised by how your benefits can apply when you visit us. Remember, the most important thing is to visit an orthodontic care team who truly has your best interests at heart, regardless of network status.
