Specialized Neuromuscular Dentistry for Malocclusion

As an accomplished orthodontist in Canton, Dr. Bart is trained in treating malocclusion and all types of neuromuscular and skeletal defects. He followed dental school by training under the direction of top orthodontists during a two-year orthodontic specialty program. That foundation, in addition to 25+ years in practice, enables him to provide effective treatment using orthodontic appliances. With these, he can prevent you from wearing down, cracking, or chipping your teeth. He’ll put you on the path to aligned teeth and jaws beginning from the first symptoms.

What Is Malocclusion?

Put simply, malocclusion is the condition in which your top and bottom teeth don’t line up when you bite down. On one end of the spectrum, you may barely even notice this. On the severe end, you can experience ongoing discomfort when eating and speaking, and your face may even take on an unnatural, distorted appearance. The causes of malocclusion are often injuries, poor dental care, or hereditary factors. There are also childhood habits that can influence this, ranging from thumb-sucking to overuse of a bottle or pacifier.

Symptoms of Malocclusion

Knowing when there might be something wrong with your bite requires recognizing the symptoms commonly associated with malocclusion. They include:

  • Misaligned teeth
  • Pain while biting or chewing
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Distorted facial appearance
  • Unintentional biting of inner cheeks or tongue
  • Speech difficulties
  • Tendency to breathe orally instead of nasally

Types of Malocclusion

Malocclusion is divided into several classes that indicate the type and severity of the condition, as well as how to best treat it.

Class 1 Malocclusion

This indicates that your upper teeth slightly overlap your lower teeth. Your bite may still be normal.

Class 2 Malocclusion

With this class, you have a severe overbite, i.e., your upper teeth and jaw protrude past your lower teeth. This condition is sometimes called retrognathism.

Class 3 Malocclusion

With this class, you have a severe underbite, i.e., your lower teeth and jaw protrude past your upper teeth. This condition is also known as prognathism.

Treatments for Malocclusion

Dr. Bart aligns teeth using traditional braces and Invisalign®. Traditional braces work with brackets and wires. We use advanced brackets that allow for shorter and more discreet treatment and greater comfort. Invisalign is among the most subtle solutions available. Its clear plastic aligners perform the same function as the brackets and wires but are transparent. These orthodontic solutions can also fix jaw misalignment in some cases with the simultaneous use of elastic bands that gently pull your jaw into place.
